The Kiss

The Kiss explores the energy that moves between two people in an intimate embrace. The figures are recognizable, but their physical forms begin to dissolve into abstract shapes, patterns, and fields of color.

At the center of the work, the heads and faces come together in the kiss, creating a point of connection from which energy moves back and forth between the two figures. That energy shifts direction, expands and contracts, changes form and intensity, and seems to bounce from one person to the other. The forms on either side extend that movement, creating a visual rhythm of exchange.

I am interested in the space between two people and what happens there when they connect. In The Kiss, that connection becomes something almost physical: an energy that can be seen moving through, around, and between the two figures.

The intricate details are an important part of that movement. I build the work slowly using watercolor pencils, colored pencils, and technical pens, drawing and layering color, lines, dots, and small internal forms. The accumulation of these marks creates the shifting surfaces and visual energy within the figures, allowing the drawing itself to become part of the exchange.
